A few updates on requests September 24, 2009

Filed under: computer access, suggestions — uonlibnews @ 2:07 am

Just to catch up on some recent requests.

No we have no fax – try NUSA or U PRINT or Post Office.

Staplers – I love this debate – we do supply up to a point – you can buy them really cheaply

The issue about people who use computers for private use -  is that it is very hard to police

- it could be Uni related work as many sites use Facebook.

No one wants to live in a police state.

Never Enough Computers March 24, 2009

Filed under: computer access, suggestions — uonlibnews @ 1:01 am

Like spotting the first blowfly of the season it has been suggested that during busy times of the day students should consider others and not waste time on Facebook and You tube.  Oh how right you are!
We have been given extra $ to add more powerpoints on Levels 3 & 4 which may help.
But as to the age old question of good manners its needs a collective agreement on standards of behaviour.

Network Issues August 6, 2008

Filed under: computer access — uonlibnews @ 4:10 am

You know and we know there are problems with the network esp. at certain times of the day at the moment (IT are working hard to fix it) – you can help by keeping off recreational sites during peak times.  This activity also bugs others who are waiting to use a computer for academic work.

Wireless Update February 18, 2008

Filed under: computer access — uonlibnews @ 12:02 am

On Saturday February 16, 2008, the University’s Wireless Networks on
the Callaghan Campus (including City Precinct) and Central Coast Campus
will be upgraded.

All existing Wireless Access Points in University buildings on these
campuses will be migrated to new Wireless Controller Systems on the new
IT Network being rolled out across the University.

The new Wireless Network will provide more reliable and secure
connections, an increased number of buildings provisioned and enable new
Network Services to be delivered in the future.

Connection to the new Wireless Network will require changes to your
Laptop’s Wireless configuration. For more information on the Wireless
Network and to get a copy of the new “User Guides”, please visit the
University Website at

Filed under: computer access, printers — uonlibnews @ 12:33 am

All DCIT computer labs are available for general access when no timetabled teaching is taking place. http://www.dcit.newcastle.edu.au/pages/labs.html

There is no weekend access available for students unless they have a University staff member in attendance and approval from Head of School.

The following link has the latest information about access after hours for students who are from School of Design, Communication and Information Technology. http://www.newcastle.edu.au/school/design-communication-it/teachingandlearning/afterhours.html

Network Cables September 17, 2007

Filed under: computer access — uonlibnews @ 12:24 am

Fixed cables are being installed in the Laptop areas in the Auchmuty Foyer and in the AIC which will mean that lending of laptop cables can eventually be phased out.

Powerpoint Access For Laptops May 8, 2007

Filed under: computer access — uonlibnews @ 11:24 pm

This is a growing problem with more and more students bringing in laptops and working with an old building built in the late 1960’s, yes before you were born! We are attempting to address the situation not just in the AIC but throughout the Library. The foyer renovations will include more powerpoints for laptop users and more study places.

The situation with the laptop tables in the AIC is temporary. Computers from level 3 have been relocated here until the foyer renovations have been completed.

Remember we do have 6 wireless laptops available for loan from the Information Desk.

We hope to expand the AIC floorspace in the near future depending on allocation of funds.
